Jeff Blazy began
radio at the early age of 15 with a dream of someday living in
California. Originally from New York, his family transplanted to
Oklahoma City when Jeff was 6, but not before his father took him to
visit a NY radio station. Jeff's dad, a record/music collector,
worked for GE and occasionally brought home prototypes of new
recorders and video devices. This would be the beginning of Jeff's
lifelong career as a broadcaster.
By his junior
year in high school, Blazy was on the air every night
at a Top 40 radio station. Heavily
influenced by an older brother and harder music, Jeff longed to be
on an Album Oriented Rock station. Within a couple of years, he
would do afternoon drive at The KATT, Oklahoma's first AOR station
(still one of OKC's highest rated stations).
Tiring of being
just a DJ announcing records and longing to entertain a morning
audience with his special sense of humor, Blazy moved on to The Q in
El Paso, Texas. At the time, The Q was one of the lowest rated
stations in the market. After Jeff's introduction as morning guy,
the station soared to #1! To this day, KLAQ is still on top!
Blazy started
doing hilarious wake-up calls, characters like Hindu Gupdi Habeeb (a
psychic who would only be able to predict terrible things that would
happen to people), poet laureate Bruce Savage (who reads rock lyrics
as poetry) and fake commercials. He honed his craft and was hired by
Denver's KBPI.
While in Denver,
Blazy was approached by KOME in San Jose. Jeff, who by this time had
been performing in stand-up comedy clubs for years, jumped at the
chance to do a morning show and to be in one of the most acclaimed
spots in the country for up and coming comedians, San Francisco.
Blazy was teamed
with Bob Lilley for 7½ years of hilarious morning shows at KOME.
During The Blazy and Bob Show, KOME reached #1 in the ratings
several times, won the Rolling Stone Readers Poll 2 years in a row,
and Blazy and Bob were named Best Morning Show in Santa Clara County
(San Jose) 4 consecutive years!
Blazy began Rise
and Shine Rock and Roll Wake Up Call Wednesdays in 1987, as well as
Battle of the Sexes, and The Dating Game. He built his own home
studio to produce his own song parodies and fake commercials called
"Blazco Productions."
The bay area's
Peninsula magazine said, "The mornings belong to Jeff Blazy." Blazy
and Bob were featured on the cover of the San Jose Mercury News'
Arts & Books section as the show to beat. The duo was featured on
ESPN's Sportsday to discuss the SF 49er's before their upcoming
Super Bowl appearance. They would also be featured on Showtime
following the October 17, 1989 earthquake. In fact, B &B were
broadcasting live from the bay bridge the day of the earthquake to
celebrate the Bay Bridge World Series. Blazy's comment that morning,
"The Stick will be rockin tonight," definitely turned prophetic.
During those
many years of success, Blazy broadcast from the World's Fair in
Australia, also from London, Tokyo, Jamaica, Los Angeles, and New
York. The Blazy & Bob Breakfast Club was held monthly, live from a
local San Jose club, and would feature musical guests like Night
Ranger, The Doobie Brothers, Mr. Big, Damn Yankees, Keith Emerson,
The Smithereens, Ronnie Montrose, Journey, Boston, Jon Waite, Peter
Frampton, among others. His band, The Blazers, would accompany
artists performing their greatest songs.
Looming overhead
while at KOME was the fact that the station's owner, Infinity
Broadcasting, had Howard Stern as its morning show in New York. It
was only a matter of time before Stern's show would take over
Infinity's northern California signal and Blazy and Bob were moved
to afternoons. Months later, KOME would say goodbye to Blazy, a move
Jeff welcomed so he could end his contract with the company and
return to mornings elsewhere. After almost eight years, the Blazy
and Bob Show was over.
Blazy's next
show was on San Francisco's KSFO. A younger, hipper talk show was
the goal. Unfortunately, ABC pulled the plug on not only his morning
show, but also the whole staff after only four months. Ironically
enough, Jeff was the host of the KSFO New Years Eve Comedy Show in
San Jose the next night! Jeff's opening line, "Its great to be here
tonight. After getting fired yesterday, its great to be anywhere."
While in SF, Jeff was a guest host on bay area TV's Mornings on 2.
Jeff's talents
weren't wasted for long. The Blazy Show moved south to Tampa Bay and
WYNF, a station Oakland Raider Lyle Alzado was once quoted as
saying, "Listen to YNF or I'll rip your head off!" The show debuted
#1 and continued strong for three years. He also was an
entertainment reporter for the local ABC TV affiliate. While at YNF,
Jeff asked owner JACOR to transfer him back to San Jose. Their
response was that he would do too much damage to Lamont and Tonelli,
a morning show already performing on one of their stations. After 3
years of success, Jeff turned down another 3-year contract to leave
for Honolulu, Hawaii.
K-POI was the
last rated radio station in Honolulu when Jeff began his morning
show there. Within one year, the station would be rated #1 men 18-54
and The Blazy Show would be #2 in men. His addition of Wild Wahine
Wednesday, Totally Live Friday, and live shows filled with Hawaiian
babes took the morning show from bottom to top. Jeff married the
love of his life, Lynn, on Oahu's north shore on Valentine's Day
1999. A year later, on February 13, 2000, they had their first
child, a son named Jack Martin Blazy. A few months later, Jeff would
leave another well-paved path of success to share his son with
relatives. Hawaii was a fabulous chapter but now it was time to get
back to California.
Enter the
101.7 The Fox, The Rock of Sonoma County!
Looking to
replace the floundering Mark & Brian Show out of LA, KXFX looked to
Jeff for his years of morning show experience, entertainment value
and to once again provide local programming to the loyal Fox
listeners and sponsors. It was a pleasure for Blazy to replace the
syndicated show just as it was beating them and getting them knocked
off his competition in Honolulu after only a few months!
The Blazy Show
signed on Monday morning after Thanksgiving, 2000. Most Fox
listeners were glad to hear not only a local voice, but to hear
MUSIC! Blazy commented immediately, "I am totally aware that at a
rock station the music shares the billing. I am comfortable with a
50/50 combination of my stuff with the music. Musically, I have
never stopped growing. I am a huge fan of the new stuff as well as
the classic. The Fox is rockin'!"
"I am so happy
to be here in Sonoma County! My wife and I bought a house here and
think this area is the best of Northern Cal." Blazy has been giving
away cash, trips, tickets and more! Plus his listeners will never
have to compete with San Jose or San Francisco to win. Sonoma County
Fox listeners will ALWAYS be the Winners!
Jack
Blazy was used in the 2004 advertising for the Santa Cruz Beach
Boardwalk.
He was seen on promotional posters and hotel pamphlets throughout
Northern California, as well as ticket envelopes for the Monterey
Bay Aquarium.
Look for
Blazy to perform stand-up comedy. He has recently opened for Dennis
Miller, Richard Lewis and Bobcat Goldthwait at Santa Rosa’s Luther
Burbank Center, and in the past he has shared a comedy stage with
Jim Carrey, Kevin Pollack, Bobby Slayton, George Carlin, Bob Hope,
Elaine Boozler, Mark Pitta, Sinbad, John Mendoza, Bob Rubin and many
others.
